Why songwriters are living a meaningful and purpose driven life Pt 1

Why is it that songwriters are living a meaningful and purpose driven life?

living a purpose driven life

Well, because sharing and rejoicing in our creativity and expressing ourselves artistically is not only an act of giving, but a celebration of our uniqueness. First, we must aim to be moved by our own art, that way when sharing, we are genuinely and authentically celebrating what we have to give to the world and therefore, there’s a greater likelihood that others will celebrate with us.

If you happen to be a writer of songs, whether seasoned or a green beginner, then I applaud you. This fast-paced life has a wicked way of dictating our days before we even rest our heads to sleep the night before. The busyness of business and financial need, can steer all of us away from living a meaningful and purposeful life if we let it. Yes, that’s a romantic view and of course, we either inherit or create an unending list of responsibilities for ourselves with each new day.

I like to believe that at the heart of it all, each and everyone of us has a creative urge that we must allow to rise to the surface if we are to thrive and feel fulfilled in that area of our lives. The arts and the creative ways of human beings have been documented since the beginning of time for a good reason. When we are moved by a great song, we come alive. Something deep inside of us ignites and our fiery hearts rejoice. It is for this reason that I feel that the following, is the best and most helpful advice I can share for anyone interested in embarking upon the beautiful craft of songwriting, or perhaps anyone who may feel that writing songs is indeed their purpose, or the act that makes them feel like they have a purpose, which by the way, to the latter, besides my relationships with my children and my loved ones, I personally and wholeheartedly confess.

Firstly, slow everything down and spend some time considering some of your favourite songs. If possible, reach in there and recall the memories of the first time you were genuinely moved by a song. Where were you? How did it make you feel? What exactly was it about the song that struck you first? Was it the opening line? Why? Maybe it was the chorus? Why? Perhaps it was simply one line from the entire song that made you stop and spend some time with your senses heightened, contemplating that one almighty, powerfully evocative line.

The great thing about “great” songs is that there are many reasons why they might stand someone still. Another wonderful fact about brilliant songs is that as sensitive human beings, we all react differently to our new encounters, this of course includes how we react to the joy of hearing a song that somehow leaves us helpless.

I love asking others what it is they like in particular about songs that they tell me are “awesome”. I do this for a few reasons. More often than not, they’ve picked-up on something I’ve missed, or they may have reacted to something that wasn’t the same as what it was that left me in awe about the same song. I learn much about songwriting from making a conscious effort to try and notice how I’m feeling and from delving deeper and from pondering the possible reasons why I’m feeling what I’m feeling.
