1. Picture the actual scene.
- What’s in the room? Furniture, flowers, rug, tables, sofa, condition of these things?
- What are the memories or stories attached to these objects?
- What’s the mood like? (The feeling in the air, heavy, sad, light, cheerful, peaceful)
- What’s the lighting like?
2. Imagine the view from another angle.
- What if you were an onlooker?
- What if you were them?
- What if they were you? Guess what they are thinking to add a new perspective.
3. Re-shuffle your lines
- Often what gets us stuck when writing lyrics is hanging on to a line that we love but it can in fact, be the reason we can’t follow through.
4. An intimate / personal thought – reveal more layers to your subject.
- Give another insight, peel back another layer of your subject’s character, you or someone else.
- Their favourite colour or the colour they don’t like?
- Their goals “I know someday you wanna be….”
- Your goals “I always wished / wanted…”
5. Imagine the story on an ongoing timescale.
Let’s not confine ourselves to these snippets of life in song. After all, real life has a story that stretches from way before and reaches way beyond. THAT’s what I mean by “there are always choices when writing lyrics”.
