Ron Sexsmith – Pretty Little Cemetery
Ron Sexsmith – Pretty Little Cemetery
Ron Sexsmith followed his eponymous and acclaimed 1995 second album (but the first with a wide release) with an excellent collection of poetic and heartfelt tunes for the wittily titled Other Songs…..
…Ron seems to understand the exquisite melancholy inherent in the human condition, where the overhanging knowledge of our own mortality informs every action and thought we have, overtly, or as is mostly the case, subliminally. In fact it is only in dying that life can have any meaning. Ron touches on the beauty and mystery this tension provides within the human experience, in the most subtle and delicate of ways with Pretty Little Cemetery. Unlike mainstream country music, where a scenario such as Ron constructs here would descend into a lake of lachrymose and maudlin melodrama, Ron’s rendering manages to create a tender and understated masterwork, quiet and assured and devastatingly effective.
